Fall Branch Volunteer Fire Department was Chartered in May of 1952. The handful of members met at Sampson’s store, and operated with a 1926 Seagrave pumper truck. George Bacon was the first chief officer, followed by Elmer Sampson. Dwight Carr. Jimmy Dawson, and Roger Phillips.
In April of 1972, there was a reorganization of the fire department and a seven-member Board of Directors was elected. The By-Laws were written to serve as guidelines for the years to come.
In February of 1974, property was purchased and in November of 1975, construction on a fire hall began. After much work the building was finished and all notes were paid off. We then joined with Gray, Limestone, Sulphur Springs and Nolichuckey Fire Departments in forming the Washington County Volunteer Fire Department Association. This was with the purpose of buying equipment and training together.
We not only provide fire protection to the community, but also medical aid. We are the only First Response program in the county.
On August 17, 2006, we held our ground breaking ceremony for our new fire station. Our new facility is nearly 14,000 total square feet with 7,000 square feet of living space. It is located at 106 Ruritan Road in Fall Branch.
Fall Branch Volunteer Fire Department Circa 1952
We currently have approximately 42 active members, including a few women, and several members who are our support staff. We have approximately 107 square miles of coverage radius in both Washington and Greene Counties, including 9 miles of Interstate 81. We have 2 engines, 2 tankers, 1 brush unit, 1 medical first responder truck, 1 support truck and 1 multi purpose utility trailer.
We are also fortunate enough to have one remaining Charter Member with us today. We are thankful for Zane (Lamar) Dawson and all the years of service and hard work he has given to the department. We also have several lifetime members. Without the service of these people in the early years we never would have made it. To these members we say thank you: Clifford Carr, Jerry Wilson, Dwight Carr, Jimmy Dawson, Roger Phillips, Jerry Chatman, Jackie Beard, Troy Hood and Joe Anderson. All of our members are an important part of what holds us together
We strive to make a difference in our community and surrounding areas and we hope to thrive and continue to grow with your help and support.
